Ayurvedic Concept
Ayurveda has suggested that after reaching the optimum level of testosterone production in the body, i.e., when the body reaches maximum production level, (usually, the young males at this stage may experience nocturnal emission (Night fall- spermatorrhea) once or twice in a month and feel unconscious erection (in the sleep), which shows the male has matured and is healthy for reproduction). This most healthy stage can be continued by doing limited occasional sex. After this stage, it starts decreasing 1 to 2 % per year and comes down to the level of 50% at the age of 50 years in normal conditions. This stage in males can be compared with Menopause stage in females. As women reach the stage of menopause with passage of time, similarly, men also reach the stage, which is known as Andropause (is a condition with clear distinct drop in testosterone hormone in men in the age group of 45 and above, cause complications including weak bones and cardiac problems and other ill effects, on the sexual health and behavior of the males. The modern medical professionals have not yet seriously studied it. From the last few decades scientists have studied the impact of old age on the body of males and have reached the above conclusion).
According to the Ayurveda, after the age of forty the production of male sex hormone (testosterone) in the males starts decreasing more rapidly, which causes the problem of poor desire for sex, irritation, loss of appetite, tension, anxiety, pain of bones and joints and increase in deposition of fats. These symptoms are known as Adogen deficiency in aging males. Though, it is compared with the menopause, the sperms remain active up to the age 65 to 75 or more.
Science is still not sure about the exact difference between menopause in women and Andropause in men because man slowly reaches this stage without any noticeable symptoms and man believes that this is due to old age. However, these cannot be considered signs of old age, but a deficiency of male hormones.
