The prostate is shaped like an inverted cone and is a fibro-muscular glandular organ that surrounds the prostatic urethra. The function of the prostate is the production of a thin, milky fluid containing citric acid and acid phosphates, which is added to the seminal fluid at the time of ejaculation. Benign enlargement of prostate, known as “mutragranthi” or “Gaduda” in Ayurveda, is common in old men over 50 years of age.
The biological humors (doshas) involved in this case are Vata (air) and Kapha (water). The symptoms consist of hesitancy, poor and prolonged urine flow and a sensation of incomplete emptying associated with urinary frequency, urgency of micturition and urge incontinence.
Symptoms due to Vata (air) predominance are associated with piercing and throbbing pain and in case of Kapha (water), the symptoms are associated with heaviness and minor pain.
