Ayurvedic Concept
Eye problems are mentioned as “Netra Roga” in Ayurvedic text. Eyes are said to be seat of Alochak Pitta (fire). Vitiated doshas (humors) affect the eyes and various symptoms produced are:
Due to Vata (air): Slight redness, absence of secretions of eye, lachrymation, pricking and cutting pain in the eyes.
Due to Pitta (fire): Burning sensation, acute pain, redness, yellowish discharge, profuse and warm lachrymation in the eyes.
Due to Kapha (water): White discharge, profuse and viscid lachrymation, heaviness and itching in the eyes.
Herbs used:
Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) (Indian Gooseberry)- Rich source of Vitamins C and iron and best antioxidant, Pitta pacifying agents, used in various eye disorders, improves vision.
Haritaki (Terminalia Chebula)- used as a major content in various eyes preparations.
Vibhitaki (Terminalia Belerica)- used as a major content in various eyes preparations.
Punarnava (Boerhavia Diffusa)- used for many purposes including liver, gallbladder, kidney, renal and urinary disorders.
Licorice (Glycyrrhiza Glabra)- Pitta, Vata and Blood pacifying agent and used as a eye tonic.
Daru-Haridra (Indian Barberry) (Berberis Aristata)- Anti-allergic and wound healing properties.
Chaksu (Cassia Absus)- Useful in dimness of vision, Inflammation of eye lids, Discharge from eye, Redness of eye and acts as Kapha-Pitta pacifying agent.
