Ayurvedic Concept
Acidity is described as “Amla Pitta” in Ayurveda and, commonly, it occurs due to faulty eating habits because the pitta (fire) gets vitiated. This vitiation produces symptoms like indigestion, tiredness, nausea, acidic belching, heaviness in body, heartburn, anorexia, laziness and burning sensations.
Acidity ("Amla pitta") is of two types:
1. Urdhva Amla Pitta (fire) (Acidity in upper abdomen)

2. Adhog Amla Pitta (fire) (Acidity or burning in lower abdomen)
Pitta (fire) associated with ama (undigested food) is the main dosha (humor) in this case. One may have burning sensation during defecation, thirst, vertigo, passing slur (unformed stool) of greenish or blackish color, nausea, urticaria, indigestion, sweating and yellowish color of the body.
