Licorice

Licorice is widely used in bronchial problems such as catarrh, bronchitis and coughs in general. It forms an important ingredient in controlling peptic ulcerations, gastritis and ulcers. It nourishes the brain increasing cranial and cerebrospinal fluid. It also improves complexion, hair and vision. Licorice helps in cases of abdominal pain, bronchitis, colds, coughs, laryngitis and general debility. It acts as a heart tonic, laxative, mucus membrane toner and soother. It reduces hyperacidity, inflammation, muscle spasms, sore throat, ulcers and painful urination.

As per Ayurveda
Anti-inflammatory, anti-hepatotoxic, anti-spasmodic, demulcent, emetic, expectorant, laxative, rejuvenating, sedative and tonic.

Precautions
There is a small possibility of affecting electrolyte balance with extended use of large doses of licorice, thus raising blood pressure. The whole herb has constituents that counter this, but it is best to avoid Licorice if the person has hypertension, kidney disease or during pregnancy. It may also interfere with calcium and potassium absorption in the body. Do not use if you are suffering from osteoporosis or hypertension (increases water around heart).
