Elevated (high) blood pressure, known as "Raktbhar Vridhi" in ancient Ayurvedic literature, is aaggering health problem for three major reasons. For one it is very common, secondly a very wide variety of consequences can and do occur and are sometimes devastating. Finally it remains asymptomatic until late in its course. Elevated blood pressure has been identified as one of the most important risk factors in both coronary heart disease and cerebrovascular (stroke) accidents. It may also lead to congestive heart and renal failure. The main biological doshas (humors) involved in elevated blood pressure are pitta (fire) and vata (air). Vitiated pitta (fire) while circulating in the body, with the help of vata (air), reaches the orifices of the dilated and obstructed splenic and hepatic blood carrying vessels. Then it causes the vitiation of Rakta (blood). So the vitiated pitta (fire) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of elevated blood pressure. In case of vitiated vata (air), elevated blood pressure is accompanied with headache and does not remain constant.
