Sanskrit name of "Bitter melon" is Karela and it has been used in Ayurveda (Indian Herbal System) for thousands of years in numerous herbal applications. Karela helps to regulate the body’s metabolism and the body's natural immune resistance due to its natural content of minerals and vitamins. Karela is an excellent fruit for maintaining healthy blood sugar level, blood pressure level, cholesterol level and triglyceride level. Karela also is ideal in use with a weight loss plan. Karela may also support joint health and flexibility.

As per Ayurvedic
Karela has been traditionally used to regulate blood sugar levels within the normal limits. Karela has been shown to regulate the body’s ability to process sugars by suppressing the neural response to the stimuli of sweet tastes. Karela contains Gurmarin, a polypeptide considered to be similar to bovine insulin, which has been shown in experimental studies to achieve a positive sugar regulating effect by suppressing the neural response to sweet taste stimuli. Bitter melon is a natural source of Vitamin C and has also been reported to show hypocholesteroemic activity.

Precautions
Individuals should avoid bitter melon if they have a known allergy to bitter melon or any member of the cucurbitaceae (gourd or melon) plant families. Some Individuals may experience headaches. Bitter melon may also decrease blood sugar levels. Caution is advised if you take prescription drugs to control your blood sugar levels. If you have diabetes and are considering using bitter melon, you should discuss this with your health care provider. Bitter melon cannot be recommended during pregnancy or breast feeding because of the risk of birth defects or miscarriage. Bitter melon may affect the ability to get pregnant. Excessively high doses of bitter melon juice may cause abdominal pain and diarrhea.
